DOGTAP pinned to DOGS on Pinterest:

WINTER HIKING WITH YOUR DOG What should be considered? Most dogs love to walk around in the snow. Unfortunately the dog paws often sink in deeply in fresh snow and ice clumps can form between the paws. In order to avoid this you can treat the paws of your dog before strolling with vaseline milking or something similar so the snow does not stick to the paws. The forest roads should be cleared and NOT spread as chippings can damage the paws of your dog. When salt spreading was used there is a risk that your dog will lick the salt after the walk and this can cause diarrhea and vomiting. So if you only find scattered winter hiking trails wash the paws of your dog with warm water after the hike. Another point with regards to deep snow and winter hikes with a dog is that walking in deep snow is very exhausting for the dog. It can lead to muscle soreness in an untrained dog which can be noticed by the fact that the dog does not like to walk on the next day or makes very quiet slow movements. Dogs can tolerate cold in general - but if you notice that your dog is trembling the walk should definitely be stopped. A walk in the snow does not prevent the dog’s coat from becoming wet and possibly forming snow in the fur. Therefore during the walk make sure that the dog remains in motion otherwise there is a risk of a cold. After the walk the snow clumps from the coat should be dissolved (warm water) and the dog should be thoroughly dried. By the way: our ID tags from DOGTAP are water and shock resistant. If you rub the DOGTAP after a wet winter walk with a cloth briefly it remains as beautiful as ever - in all functions it is never restricted anyway.
